Vastu Shastra believes that the world comprises 5 elements often referred as the Panch Maha Bhoota and human life is based on the presence and balance of these fundamental elements. The Shastra advocates some principles based on the understanding of these elements and its effects in human life and the world.

5 Pillars of Vastu Shastra – The Panch Maha Bhoota

  • Earth or Bhumi is the third planet away from the sun and one of the fundamental elements of Vastu Shastra. It is a magnetic base with the northern and southern poles and its gravitational force has effects on both living and non-living objects on the Earth.

  • Water or Jal represents rain, river, sea and ocean. Water can be in the form of liquid, solid and gaseous like river in liquid, ice in solid and steam in gaseous. It is another fundamental element in Vastu Shastra. Water is a part of every plant and animal.

  • Air or Vayu is the source of life for all human beings, plants and animals. Human life dwells around air flow, air temperature, air pressure, air composition and more. Air is one of the fundamental elements in Vastu Shastra.

  • Fire or Agni represents light and heat. The sun is the natural source of both light and heat. This fundamental element of Vastu Shastra connects with energy, enthusiasm, passion and more.

  • Space or Akasha is the fifth and final element in Vastu Shastra. It is considered as the source of physical energies, sound energies and cognitive energies. Physical energies include sound and light, sound energies include emotional and cognitive energies include intellectual.

Vastu Shastra for Architecture

Vastu Shastra based on the five fundamental elements and Vastu Purusha Mandala is used on architecture. Directions and the flow of energy together direct certain characteristics to be implemented in sites and buildings. Vastu Shastra thus comes up with different rules for home, office, apartments, temples, hotels etc. As for example, a house should always face east or north, as it is considered more auspicious compared to the other sides in terms of Vastu Shastra. The suggested direction brings in positive energy in the surroundings and effects human lives in a positive manner. Similarly, Vastu Shastra has different suggestions for different types of sites and buildings.
